Writing in the first person means you write only what the speaker (perhaps
you… if you are writing your memoir)(or the main character in your story) sees, hears, touches and perceives.
Writing in first person keeps your reader along side your speaker (you or your character) as the action happens–this builds suspense and surprise. Detective, and crime novels are often written in first person for this reason.
If you or your character’s name was Jane –and you wrote: John was thinking of buying flowers–you are not writing in first person. If you write: Jane(or I) saw John cup his chin and smile at the roses display at the florist shop. This is first person.
Anything thoughts, comments or tips?
